How To Use The "Snowball" Method To Pay Off Debt (On a Normal Salary)
The exact steps to use the debt snowball method to clear your balances, build momentum, and finally get debt-free on a normal salary.

pin it for later โ
I'm going to be honest with you: I cried at my kitchen table the night I added it all up. $10,504 all on one credit card
The moment it clicked
I'd been "trying" to pay off my credit card debt for a full year. Making minimum payments, throwing a random $50 extra whenever I felt guilty. The balances barely moved because interest was eating me alive.
The shift wasn't finding more money. It was picking a method and refusing to negotiate with myself about it anymore.
Why I chose the debt snowball
There are two main methods:
- Snowball โ pay smallest balance first, regardless of interest rate. Fast wins.
- Avalanche โ pay highest interest rate first. Mathematically optimal.
The avalanche saves more money on paper. The snowball saves your motivation. I picked snowball because I'd already tried being logical for a year straight and I was still in debt. I needed to feel progress.
Here's a hypothetical example of how the snowball method can be used:
List every debt smallest to biggest:
- Old Kohl's card โ $340
- Visa โ $2,100
- Car loan โ $8,900
- Student loan โ $11,000
The snowball method requires that you pay off the minimum on each everything except #1, which gets every extra dollar. When #1 gets totally wiped out, that whole payment gets rolled into #2. And so on. That's the snowball โ the amount of money dedicated to each source of debt keeps getting bigger, the momentum keeps building.
Starting out with just focusing on the minimums on each debt source and every extra dollar going toward the first credit card is what That win carried me through the next eighteen months.
Where does the extra money come from?
Real talk, you can't out-frugal a real debt. You have to make a little bit more and also save a little bit more too. Here's an example of what that could look like:
- $400/mo โ cut cable, two subscriptions, and start meal prepping (yes, really)
- $600/mo โ freelance or gig work on evenings and weekends
- $200/mo โ sell clothes, furniture, an old iPad, or any material items around your house that you don't see yourself needing in the future
Based on the example above, that's an extra $1,200 a month going to debt.
The mindset shifts that mattered
Debt is not a personality trait. It's a math problem with a deadline.
I stopped calling it "my debt" like it was permanent. It was just a project. A project I was ending.
I also stopped punishing myself. I gave myself a $75 fun budget every month โ not zero โ because I knew I'd blow the whole plan if I white-knuckled it for an entire year.
What I'd do differently
If I were starting over:
- I'd build a $1,000 baby emergency fund first so I didn't reach for the credit card again mid-payoff (I have done that before,, and it stings).
- I'd automate the extra payment on payday, not "whenever I remembered."
- I'd tell one friend or my partner. Accountability is free and it works.
Your turn
If you're staring at a scary number right now, I promise you: it's smaller than it feels once you have a plan. Write every debt down. Pick a method. Find $100 extra a month somewhere โ anywhere.
Then start. Not Monday. Not next paycheck. Today.
I'm rooting for you!
